“Dear Job Candidate,
As I am sure you are aware, businesses across the world are putting in place policies and procedures to best deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.
With that being said, at our Brilliant Company, we are putting all recruitment (read: people’s lives) on hold until it is advised by the UK government that we can return to normality.
Kind regards,
Your Brilliant Company”
This is the bad news job seekers have been receiving as if their usual troubles with recruitment were not enough.
Companies are preparing for downsizing and lay-offs and some have already started redundancy procedures.
Hiring and recruitment activities are put on hold or cancelled indicating that they will have to wait for a better time.
The problem is too serious to think that a “stay positive” attitude can help job seekers with the current disruption on the labour market. Motivational statements and shoulder patting cannot help.
The economy needs a systemic solution that will mobilise all stakeholders around measures that save businesses and jobs. That will take time to get started. Meanwhile, businesses cannot afford to wait and to be told whether and how to continue.
If You are a Job Seeker
- Widen your job search. Leave the narrow search zone and apply for a variety of jobs you know you can do. Your goal is to find a job and that might not be the one you would usually accept. Be clear about your goal.
- Revise your profile to get better chances. Define what your strongest sets of skills are. Write separate CVs to cover each of them.
- Apply to a wider range of jobs. There are no ideal jobs anyway but in times of crisis, the chances to get your ‘dream job’ are pretty slim. A wider range of jobs includes temporary, part-time or freelance
- Target prospective employers. Position yourself and your CVs against a wider range of prospective companies and organisations. Do a thorough search on their current status and plans before you send your unsolicited CV.
- Connect with people online and on the phone. There are people who can help you either with arranging a job interview, providing a job or working with you on specific goals.
- Stay open for the opportunities. Find ways to keep your mind constantly open and present in the “infinite mindset” zone. It will help you to keep yourself alert and vigilant.
